What Is the Summer Slide? And How to Stop It!

Over the summer kids can lose more than two months of what they learned during the school year. It’s called the “summer slide”, or “summer learning loss”, and it’s what happens when kids hang off the end of the couch all summer and their times tables fall out of their heads along with everything they learned about punctuation.

The summer slide is a problem. It’s a problem for kids and it’s a problem for the nine out of ten teachers who have to spend the first month of school re-teaching everything the kids learned the year before. And while a month here and a month there may not seem like such a big deal, that loss adds up: by middle school kids can be short-changed up to two years of learning.

The good news is that you don’t need any special expertise to fight the summer slide. You just need to keep kids reading. And the best part about reading in the summer? It can be fun!

You know what has lots of reading? And it’s fun? A Mail Order Mystery.

This summer you can send your kids to spy school. It sounds so much more fun than summer school, doesn’t it? A bit of spy training and a top secret spy handbook are all kids need to stop an evil villain with an evil plan to end all fun forever, mwa ha haaa!

Or kids can sharpen their deductive logic, by which we mean detective skills, and help crack The Case of the Missing Bigfoot.

Or they can set out on a Treasure Hunt in search of pirate loot.  There are clues to be found in letters, magazines, voicemails and ancient notes and maps.

Or they can accept a noble mission to embark upon their knight training (which includes daily jumping jacks, push-ups and reading to keep their minds sharp.) Have they got what it takes to wake the princess from her 699 year long Enchanted Slumber? You bet they do. They just need to put the clues together.

This summer, make learning fun and stop the summer slide with a Mail Order Mystery.
